By car:

Plovdiv Airport is located 130 km from Sofia, the two cities are connected by motor highway and distance takes less than 2 hours. The airport is located near the road Plovdiv-Asenovgrad, the distance is about 10 km.

Public transport:

From December 2010, Tuesdays and Saturdays, you can get a bus, that  serves the regular line Plovdiv – Asenovgrad, from South Station – Plovdiv (Avtogara Yug) at 9.50 a.m. which arrives at Plovdiv Airport at 10:15 a.m. and from Plovdiv airport: 12:05 a.m., arriving at South Station (Avtogara Yug) at 12:25 a.m.

Plovdiv airport provides free bus services for passengers of all international carriers in the event of delay when Plovdiv used as alternate of Sofia Airport, or any other airport in Bulgaria. Being the first alternative airport of Sofia Airport, Plovdiv is serving its traffic, when the weather conditions at Sofia are unfavourable. In such cases all Bulgarian airlines and also some of the foreign carriers, such as British Airways, Austrian Airlines, Malev, CSA, LOT, Aeroflot, Wizz Air and many others divert their flights to Plovdiv.

By train:

A railway station Mavrudovo is located 3 km. away from the new terminal, where you can get a taxi to the airport.

Parking:

The public parking lot is located nearby the main terminal building and has 70 car spaces. It’s available 24/7 and currently it is FREE of charge.

About the airport

Location

Plovdiv International Airport is located 12 km. South-East from the city of Plovdiv and serves the main Bulgarian ski-resorts Pamporovo and Borovets (situated respectively 60 and 90 km from the airport). Plovdiv airport serves charter, cargo, passenger and business flights. The airport is a satellite of the Sofia Airport and often serves passengers traveling from and to Sofia, when Sofia airport is closed because of fog or any other reason. Sometimes PlovdivAirport takes the flights entirely.

Danish company Nordic Airport Infrastructure ApS. is the majority owner of Plovdiv International Airport with 58.08% and the rest of the shares are owned by the Bulgarian State. The development plan for Plovdiv Airport includes to become a preferred destination for low-cost airlines, and to stimulate the tourism industry in Plovdiv and the region.

The strategic geographical location of Bulgaria gives the opportunity to develop Plovdiv International Airport even as a hub and transfer centre for destinations at Europe, the Middle East and the Balkans.

The new terminal and apron extension

The current traffic at Plovdiv Airport is pretty low: about 100.000. Potential is for 500.000 passengers per anum. In 2009 the Bulgarian government has made an investment worth over 20 million Euro for the entire infrastructural development of the airport. A new passenger terminal has been built and it occupies 6,750m², accommodating large public and passengers halls, fast food premises, shops and offices. Runway length is 2500 m., width is 45 m. The apron has been extended in 2009 and it can now accommodate up to 13 mid-size aircraft at the same time.

Airlines and destinations

Plovdiv Airport is operational 24/7 and it is staffed with experienced personnel, performing passengers, cargo and business flights services for numerous airlines.

Regular flights from Plovdiv Airport:

In November 2010 the Irish airline Ryanair, the largest low-cost carrier in Europe, started scheduled flights between Plovdiv and London Stansted Airport, located 48 km from the capital of Britain. Ryanair has a base 44 airports and over 1100 low-cost routes across 26 countries, linking 155 destinations. The company operates 250 new aircraft Boeing 737-800. The regular flights of Ryanair to Plovdiv Airport are something new for the Plovdiv airport, where until 2010 were operated mostly charters. Ryanair expects to carry 30 thousand passengers per year to and from Plovdiv. The company plans to gradually increase the flights so that passengers’ reach 200 thousand. Due the great interest, Ryanair is launching three extra flights – two in the last two Thursdays of December and one in the first week after New Year. Regular flights are on Tuesday and Saturday.

Charter flights from Plovdiv Airport:

From December to April, during the Winter season, airport serves daily tourist charter flights to the main ski-resorts Pamporovo, Bansko and Borovetz. Destinations are, as follows: London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, East Midlands, Glasgow, Humberside, Newcastle, Cork, Belfast and Dublin. These flights are operated by airlines Thomsonfly, Thomas Cook, BMI, XL Airways, Monarch, Czech Airlines, Air Malta
etc. Bulgaria Air and other charter airlines operate flights to destinations such as Hurghada, Cairo, Monastir. Regular flights to Moscow are carried by airline S7 and the Russian carrier will operate seasonal scheduled services to Moscow-Domodedovo, starting 30.12.2010.

Pamporovo:

Pamporovo is located 90 kilometers south of Plovdiv. It is a modern winter resort, which attracts tourists in the summer as well. Pamporovo is located in the heart of Rhodopi Mountain. It is the southernmost mountain resort in Europe with 120 days of sunshine during winter. Its proximity to the Aegean Sea influences its climate.

The major ski tracks start right from the peak, crowned with the TV tower. Pamporovo is proud to offer ski tracks for all skill levels, as well as plenty of opportunities for off-course skiing. There are slopes suitable for giant slalom as well. The total length of the ski tracks is 17.5 kilometers, the longest slope is 4 kilometers, the maximum vertical drop is 476 meters, the tows are 13, and the chair

Borovets:

Borovets is the oldest and the largest ski resort in Bulgaria. It is located in the northern foot of Rila Mountain in a forest area just under the Mussala peak. The resort’s average elevation is 1350 meters above the sea level and is easily accessible. It is 120 kilometers away from Plovdiv. Generations of Bulgarians have had their first ski experience there. Borovets is a modern and fully developed first-class ski resort with luxury hotels, restaurants, discos, shops, and a good choice of ski tracks and lifts.

The mountain there is covered with now from the middle of December till April. The resort offers 18 ski tracks with a total length of 40 kilometers. The biathlon and cross-country ski tracks start just 2 kilometers from the center of the resort and have a total length of 18 kilometers. The ski center is serviced by 14 tows, 3 chair-lifts, and 1 cable car. Eight artificial snow generators and more than 200 ski-instructors speaking many foreign languages are available to the tourists there. Fans of snowboarding and extreme skiing have not been neglected since there are plenty of opportunities for off-course thrills.

Riding dog sleighs is also allowed. The mountain rescue service works non-stop. Pamporovo boasts with the only Olympic size snowboard half pipe in Bulgaria.

The Bachkovo Monastery
Virgin Mary Monastery of Bachkovo is located 29 kilometers south of Plovdiv. It is accessible from the Assenovgrad – Smolian road, a few kilometers away from the village of Bachkovo.

Hisar
The town of Hisar is located in the central part of Sredna Gora Mountain, 41 kilometers north-west of Plovdiv. It is one of the most famous mineral water health resorts in Bulgaria.

Banya Village
This mineral water and medical mud health resort is known as Karlovski Mineralni Bani.

Narechenski Bani
Narechenski Bani is a mineral water and a health resort located in Rhodopi Mountain, 50 kilometers south of Plovdiv.

Chudni Mostove (The Wonderful Bridges)
Chudni Mostove is one the most amazing natural phenomenon in Bulgaria. This unique and amazing rock phenomenon is on the ridge of Chernatitsa hill.

Momin Prohod Village
The resort Momin Prohod is located between the slopes of Sredna Gora Mountain and the Rhodopi Mountain.

Koprivshtitsa
Koprivshtitsa is located about 80 kilometers north-west of Plovdiv. It is considered a museum of the Bulgarian Renaissance architecture as there are more than 250 architectural monuments from the period of the Bulgarian Renaissance.

Stara Zagora
Stara Zagora is located 90 kilometers north-east of Plovdiv. It is famous for its straight streets, lime trees, and poets. It is located in the feet of Sredna Gora Mountain, at an elevation of 197 meters above the sea level.

Smolian
The town of Smolian is located 100 kilometers away from Plovdiv. It has a population of about 35 000 people. It is the longest town in Bulgaria.
